Krishnamachari Srikkanth Labels Ruturaj Gaikwad an Ordinary Cricketer After CSK Loss

A Stinging Critique from a Legend

The landscape of the Indian Premier League is often defined by the performance of its captains, and recently, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has found himself in the firing line. Following a disheartening defeat to the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Lucknow this past Friday, former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth did not mince his words. Srikkanth, known for his unfiltered analysis, labeled Gaikwad an ordinary cricketer, highlighting a season of underperformance that has put the five-time champions in a precarious position.

The Match That Sealed the Frustration

The clash against LSG was billed as a pivotal moment for CSK, yet the team failed to fire when it mattered most. With Lucknow already eliminated from the playoff race, they entered the match with the freedom of a team having nothing to lose. This lack of pressure served them well as their bowlers, led by Akash Singh, dismantled the CSK top order within the first eight overs. While contributions from Kartik Sharma and Dewald Brevis provided some stability, and a late surge from Shivam Dube and Prashant Veer added necessary runs to reach a total of 187, it was ultimately insufficient.

The chase was masterfully controlled by Mitchell Marsh, who decimated the CSK bowling attack. Marsh’s aggressive 90 off 38 balls, supported by Josh Inglis, ensured that the target was never truly a threat. The final flourish by Nicholas Pooran, who struck four consecutive sixes against Anshul Kamboj, sealed a consolation victory for LSG and left CSK searching for answers.

Srikkanth’s Assessment of the Opening Duo

In his recent appearance on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth focused his frustration on the opening partnership of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson. According to the former selector, the failure of the openers to provide consistent starts has been the primary reason for CSK’s struggles this season. “Sanju and Ruturaj have not had a single standout partnership the whole season. Openers are the key to success. Gaikwad has been ordinary the entire season,” Srikkanth stated.

He further criticized their tactical approach during the LSG encounter, noting that both batters failed to adapt to the conditions and were easily stifled by the LSG bowling unit. While Samson struggled to find rhythm with 20 runs off 20 balls, Gaikwad’s contribution was even more minimal, managing just 13 runs from 9 deliveries.

The Road Ahead: A High-Stakes Conclusion

The path to the playoffs for CSK is now narrow and fraught with pressure. The team must win both of their remaining league matches and significantly boost their net run rate to remain in contention for the post-season. This marks the third consecutive season where CSK has faced the risk of elimination during the league stage, a reality that has clearly frustrated fans and critics alike.

Srikkanth acknowledged the complexity of the current points table, noting that other teams like Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad are also facing their own battles with inconsistency. “CSK aren’t ruled out yet,” Srikkanth added, reflecting on the tight margins that currently define the IPL 2026 season. “SRH are also coming off a terrible defeat. So both teams will play that game with a lot of tension.”

What Must Change for CSK?

As CSK prepares for their upcoming fixtures against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai on May 18 and the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on May 21, the spotlight remains firmly on Gaikwad. The captain is under immense pressure to lead from the front and silence his critics. Whether he can find the form that once made him a household name in the IPL or if this season will be remembered as a missed opportunity, remains to be seen. For a franchise built on legacy and consistency, these final two matches represent a test of character that could define the immediate future of the team’s leadership.
