Rishabh Pant’s Replacements: LSG Players In Race To Be Appointed Captain For IPL

The Crisis at Lucknow Super Giants

The conclusion of the IPL 2026 season was a sobering affair for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Finishing at the bottom of the points table has triggered an inevitable internal review, with the spotlight firmly fixed on captain Rishabh Pant. After a record-breaking INR 27 crore acquisition, the expectations were sky-high for Pant to spearhead the franchise into a new era. Unfortunately, the investment has yielded diminishing returns.

Pant managed only 312 runs in 13 innings with a strike rate of 138.05, struggling to find rhythm. More concerningly, the team’s win-loss record under his tenure—11 victories against 17 defeats—has forced Director of Cricket Tom Moody to publicly admit that a leadership reassessment is on the horizon. As the franchise looks toward the future, several internal candidates have emerged as potential successors.

Aiden Markram: The Tactical Specialist

Among the frontrunners, Aiden Markram stands out as the most natural fit. Having captained extensively across international cricket and various T20 leagues, including the SA20, Markram brings a wealth of tactical maturity. His record is impressive: 56 wins in 110 matches. Furthermore, his ability to anchor the top order while managing high-pressure situations makes him a formidable candidate.

Markram is particularly noted for his performance in knockout stages, boasting an average of 70.5 in tournament semi-finals. Having already experienced the IPL environment during his time with Sunrisers Hyderabad, he possesses the necessary familiarity with Indian conditions to lead a complex squad like LSG.

Mitchell Marsh: The Fearless Leader

Mitchell Marsh represents an aggressive, modern approach to captaincy. As a leader for both the Australian national side and the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League, Marsh has cultivated an environment of fearless cricket. His win-loss ratio is among the best of the contenders, with 34 wins in 60 T20 matches as captain.

Marsh brings dressing-room authority and a track record of winning, especially when fielding first. His presence could provide the tactical flexibility and international stature required to revitalize a team that currently lacks clear direction. His appointment would signal a move toward a more proactive and bold brand of cricket for Lucknow.

Nicholas Pooran: The Continuity Candidate

Nicholas Pooran offers something the other candidates cannot: immediate integration. Having served within the current LSG setup, he shares an established rapport with the existing core group. His leadership experience is vast, spanning leagues like the CPL, ILT20, and MLC, alongside his time with the West Indies team.

Pooran’s record of 43 wins in 84 T20 matches shows he can handle the volatility of franchise cricket. His ability to perform in big games—evidenced by his averages of 69 in qualifying finals and 66.5 in elimination finals—makes him a reliable option under pressure. For LSG, choosing Pooran would minimize the disruption of a leadership transition.

The Dilemma: Should LSG Replace Pant?

While the statistics clearly favor Markram, Marsh, and Pooran, the decision to remove Rishabh Pant is not merely a numbers game. Pant remains a commercial juggernaut and a massive brand identity for the franchise. Stripping him of the captaincy after only two seasons could lead to significant instability and a loss of public interest.

The management faces a difficult choice: stick with the star power of Pant and attempt to build a stronger support structure around him, or pivot toward a statistically superior leader to force an immediate improvement in on-field results. As IPL 2027 approaches, Lucknow must balance the demands of modern tactical leadership with the long-term branding goals of the franchise. Regardless of the path chosen, it is clear that the status quo is no longer an option if the Super Giants hope to reclaim their place among the IPL elite.
