A Season Unraveling in the Capital
The Rajasthan Royals, once the frontrunners of the IPL 2026 season, find themselves in a precarious position after a demoralizing loss to the Delhi Capitals. The defeat marked the team’s third consecutive loss, capping off a dramatic decline for a franchise that began their campaign with four straight victories. What was meant to be a push for playoff security has transformed into a desperate scramble for survival, leaving observers and legends of the game alike questioning the team’s internal cohesion.
Srikkanth: ‘It Felt Like They Wanted to Lose’
Former India captain Kris Srikkanth did not mince words when analyzing the performance of the inaugural champions. Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Srikkanth expressed deep frustration, suggesting that the team’s tactical decisions were not just poor, but inexplicable. At the center of his frustration was the decision to bench veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in favor of the inexperienced Ravi Singh during a high-stakes match.
“It was stupidity not playing one of Jadeja or Bishnoi,” Srikkanth remarked. “How can you not play a gun all-rounder like Jadeja in a must-win game? It felt like RR didn’t want to win this match. It looked like they played to lose.” Srikkanth further highlighted that captain Riyan Parag’s behavior, including his refusal to receive the trophy for maximum sixes, pointed to potential internal fractures within the squad.
Tactical Blunders and the Impact Player Rule
The criticism extended to the coaching staff’s utilization of the Impact Player rule. Rajasthan opted to bring in Dasun Shanaka to bolster their batting, a move that yielded little return. Shanaka contributed a modest 10 runs off 8 deliveries and, despite taking the wicket of KL Rahul, proved expensive with the ball. Srikkanth dismissed the move as a “stupid” gamble, noting that the team was already significantly weakened by the absence of a specialized all-rounder.
The match itself featured a tale of two halves. After a promising start powered by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s explosive 46 off 21 balls and fifties from Dhruv Jurel and Riyan Parag, the innings suffered a catastrophic collapse. Mitchell Starc’s return in the 15th over turned the tide, as he dismantled the middle order to leave the Royals reeling at 193/8 after being positioned at 161/2.
Defensive Failures and On-Field Tensions
The chase saw DC’s Abhishek Porel and KL Rahul build a solid foundation, and despite a brief wobble, the Capitals cruised to victory thanks to late-order contributions from Axar Patel and Ashutosh Sharma. The Royals’ defensive planning was particularly scrutinized, especially Riyan Parag’s decision to entrust the 18th over to Donovan Ferreira.
“He’s bowling that over because of two left-handers. Is he even an actual off-spinner?” Srikkanth asked rhetorically. The move proved costly as Ferreira conceded 16 runs, including two sixes. Srikkanth also noted the optics of the captain’s reaction: “After he gave 16 runs, Parag is throwing his cap as if it’s someone else’s fault. You captained foolishly. There are some rumblings within the team 100%.”
The Road Ahead
With only 12 points from 12 matches, the Rajasthan Royals are now in a “win-or-go-home” scenario. Their remaining fixtures against the Lucknow Super Giants on May 19 and the Mumbai Indians on May 24 will define their season. Even with victories in both games, the Royals remain dependent on other results falling in their favor. The path to the playoffs has narrowed significantly, and unless the management can rectify the tactical and internal issues identified by critics, the Royals risk an early exit from a tournament they once dominated.
