IPL 2026: Rishabh Pant Fined INR 12 Lakhs for Slow Over-Rate Against CSK
A Costly Victory: Rishabh Pant Fined After LSG Win
The business end of the IPL 2026 season has proven to be nothing short of a rollercoaster, with the race for the four playoff spots intensifying with every ball bowled. On Friday, the Rishabh Pant-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) injected significant drama into the qualification race by securing a clinical victory over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). While the result was a massive boost for LSG’s campaign, the victory came at a personal financial cost for the skipper.

The Match Context
The encounter between LSG and CSK was a pivotal moment for both franchises. For Lucknow, the match was highlighted by an explosive batting display from Mitchell Marsh. Marsh proved to be the architect of the chase, dismantling the CSK bowling attack with a blistering 90 runs off just 38 deliveries. Although he was eventually dismissed via a run-out in the 12th over, his contribution made the target look significantly easier to chase down than initially anticipated.
However, while the batters were clinical, the same could not be said for the team’s efficiency in the field. The Lucknow Super Giants were notably unhurried during their bowling innings, a lapse in judgment that ultimately led to official sanctions from the league authorities.
The Penalty Explained
During the match, LSG utilized a pace-heavy attack, with 16 out of the 20 overs bowled by fast bowlers. The remaining four overs were completed by the team’s lone spinner, Shahbaz Ahmed. Despite this distribution, the side failed to adhere to the strict time limits set by the tournament organizers for completing their overs.
Because the team took well over the allotted time to finish their defensive quota, Rishabh Pant, in his capacity as captain, was held accountable. Under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which strictly regulates minimum over-rate offences, Pant was fined INR 12 lakhs.
Official Statement from the IPL
The Indian Premier League released an official statement clarifying the reasoning behind the penalty. The press release stated: “Rishabh Pant, Captain, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 59 of TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).”
The statement further emphasized that this was the first offence for the team during the 2026 season: “As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Rishabh Pant was fined INR 12 lakhs.”
Looking Ahead
While a fine of INR 12 lakhs is a significant sum, the priority for the Lucknow Super Giants remains firmly on the points table. With the competition reaching its climax, every percentage point in the net run rate and every tactical decision on the field becomes crucial. Captains are often under immense pressure to balance field placements, bowling changes, and the speed of play. For Rishabh Pant and his management team, the focus will now shift to ensuring that future matches are completed within the designated time frames to avoid further disciplinary action that could jeopardize their standing in the tournament.
As the race for the playoffs reaches its boiling point, fans will be watching closely to see if teams can maintain their composure and discipline amidst the high-pressure environment of the final group stage matches.
