A Gesture of Gratitude for the Unsung Heroes of Cricket

In a heartwarming move that has resonated throughout the local sports landscape, former cricketers and dedicated sports organizers in Sylhet have launched a special humanitarian initiative to support the ground staff of the Sylhet District Sports Association ahead of the Eid festivities. This thoughtful campaign saw the distribution of Eid gifts valued at BDT 100,000, serving as both a material benefit and a profound sign of respect for the individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes.

Recognizing the Invisible Workforce

Often, the success of a cricket match or a training session is credited solely to the players on the field. However, the pristine condition of the pitch and the readiness of the facilities are the direct results of the grueling, often unseen labor provided by the ground staff. By acknowledging their contribution, the organizers have highlighted a vital aspect of sports culture that frequently goes unnoticed.

Prominent Figures Stand in Solidarity

The event was marked by the presence of esteemed figures from the region’s sports and legal communities. Former Bangladesh national cricket team captain Rajin Saleh led the initiative, joined by Syed Fazla Elahi Obhi, an executive committee member of the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association. Their attendance underscored the importance of the initiative, signaling that the welfare of support staff is a priority for the leadership of the community.

Reflecting on the importance of these workers, Syed Fazla Elahi Obhi stated, “Ground workers quietly play a very important role in keeping sports facilities and activities running smoothly. This initiative is our way of recognizing their contribution and sharing the joy of Eid with them.”

Personal Connections Beyond the Game

For Rajin Saleh, the event was more than just a formal gesture; it was a personal homecoming. As a legendary figure in Sylhet cricket, Saleh expressed a deep emotional connection to the staff who have maintained the grounds throughout his career. “My cricket journey started from this very ground. Because of that, many of the ground workers feel like family to me. My connection with them is not only through cricket, but also from the heart,” he remarked during the program.

A Commitment to Future Respect

The initiative was supported by a robust contingent of local sports officials, including Sylhet First Division Cricket League secretary Kabir Ahmed, vice president Khubeb Ahmed, joint secretary Evan Chowdhury, and Sylhet district cricket coach Rana Mia. Their collective participation reinforces a growing movement within the Sylhet cricket community to treat support personnel with the dignity they deserve.

Kabir Ahmed, speaking on behalf of the league, emphasized that this was not a one-time event but part of an ongoing commitment. “Since the beginning of the league, we promised to give ground workers the respect they truly deserve. This initiative is part of continuing that commitment,” he noted.

Impact on the Community

The success of this Eid initiative serves as a blueprint for how sports associations can better serve their staff. By fostering an environment where ground workers feel valued, the Sylhet District Sports Association is setting a standard for inclusivity and mutual respect. This effort has been met with widespread praise across the local sports community, serving as a reminder that the spirit of cricket—and indeed the spirit of Eid—is rooted in kindness, gratitude, and community support.

As the festivities approach, the ground staff of Sylhet can take pride in knowing that their hard work has not gone unnoticed. Through this initiative, the community has ensured that those who prepare the stage for others to shine are now in the spotlight themselves, receiving the recognition and care they have earned.
