A Vision for the Future: Shakib Al Hasan’s Road Back
With the global cricketing calendar increasingly dominated by preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, Bangladesh is in the midst of long-term planning. At the heart of these discussions is the nation’s most prominent cricket superstar, Shakib Al Hasan. Despite recent uncertainties regarding his status within the national setup, the former captain remains firm in his ambition to contribute to the Tigers’ journey over the next few years.
In a recent appearance on the Off Screen With Sayeed Zaman podcast, Shakib addressed the elephant in the room regarding his return to the national team. He maintained a pragmatic stance, deferring the ultimate decision to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), team management, and the national selectors. For Shakib, the focus is entirely on performance and whether the board deems his contributions still vital to the team’s overarching goals.
Prioritizing the ODI Format
Shakib has clarified his future roadmap, indicating a pivot away from the grueling demands of Test and T20 cricket. While he expressed a sentimental desire to conclude his career in those formats with a final, definitive series, his primary focus has narrowed significantly. The 2027 ODI World Cup stands as a major beacon on his horizon.
“I’m not too concerned about Tests or T20s,” Shakib explained. “It would feel nice if I could finish those formats with one final series. Since the ODI World Cup is next year, if the BCB has plans involving me and if everything gets sorted out this year, then the ODI World Cup could definitely be a possibility.”
The BPL as a Gateway
The immediate path back to the national team, according to Shakib, lies in domestic dominance. The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) represents more than just a tournament for the all-rounder; it serves as a critical testing ground to prove his fitness and form to the selectors. He believes that a standout performance in the upcoming BPL season would provide a compelling, undeniable case for his inclusion in the national squad.
“A lot depends on different situations, so nothing can be guaranteed,” Shakib noted. “But if I can return this year, play in the BPL, and perform well, then there would be a strong reason for the national team to think about me again.”
Fitness and Mental Resilience
Critics have often questioned the veteran’s preparation, but Shakib remains confident in his ability to regain peak fitness within a month of dedicated training. He points to his recent outings, including a successful stint in the ILT20, as evidence that he still possesses the necessary caliber to compete at the highest level. “I wouldn’t have that confidence if my performances were poor,” he stated. “If I wasn’t performing well or if franchise teams no longer wanted me, then I wouldn’t have this confidence.”
Addressing recent physical challenges, the all-rounder admitted to a slight dip in conditioning due to an extended break from competitive cricket. However, he has already commenced a rigorous training program to ensure he is in top form for upcoming tournament commitments. Beyond the physical, Shakib spoke candidly about the emotional toll of his current exile from his home country. Describing the situation as one of the most testing periods of his life, he acknowledged the mental strain of being unable to return to his birthplace. “This is a new challenge for my mental strength. I feel like Allah is testing me in the hardest way possible,” he reflected.
As Shakib prepares for his next chapter, the cricket fraternity will be watching closely. Whether he can bridge the gap between his personal ambition and the national team’s requirements remains to be seen, but his determination to perform on the domestic stage is the first clear step in that high-stakes journey.
