A Challenging Season for Chennai Super Kings
The 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season has been nothing short of a rollercoaster for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). After a disappointing loss to the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium—a match where they were defeated by five wickets with an over to spare—the team finds itself at a critical crossroads. As the franchise reflects on a campaign that fell short of expectations, discussions regarding the future leadership of the side have begun to take center stage.
Manoj Tiwary’s Bold Recommendation
Former Kolkata Knight Riders champion Manoj Tiwary has weighed in on the team’s struggles, offering a candid assessment of current skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. Speaking to Cricbuzz, the former Indian batter suggested that it might be time for CSK to look in a different direction for leadership. Tiwary specifically pointed toward Sanju Samson as the ideal candidate to spearhead the team in the upcoming season.
Tiwary emphasized the immense pressure that comes with succeeding a legend like MS Dhoni. “One says that Gaikwad needed to fill MS Dhoni’s shoes, but the size of those shoes is very big to fill,” Tiwary noted. He added that Gaikwad must focus on creating his own legacy, but that current form remains a significant hurdle. “A leader can be positive and fluent when he is scoring runs, which he isn’t at this moment,” he explained.
Why Sanju Samson?
The argument for bringing in Sanju Samson is rooted in his experience and tactical maturity. According to Tiwary, Samson is a natural fit for the CSK setup given his previous leadership experience with the Rajasthan Royals. “Samson is in the mix to be the next captain, and it will be a good choice,” Tiwary remarked. He highlighted that despite the team’s current performance, a decision regarding the captaincy must be made well before the 2027 season begins.
Gaikwad’s Stint in Perspective
Ruturaj Gaikwad inherited a massive responsibility. Following MS Dhoni’s legendary tenure, which spanned 244 matches, the pressure on the 29-year-old was immense. To date, Gaikwad has captained 32 games, securing 14 wins and suffering 18 losses, resulting in a win percentage of 43.75%. While these numbers reflect a team in transition, the lack of momentum in crucial matches has sparked intense scrutiny from fans and pundits alike.
In the recent loss to SRH, Gaikwad’s struggle was evident as he managed only 15 runs from 21 balls, failing to find a single boundary. This inability to anchor the innings or accelerate when needed has mirrored the broader challenges faced by the team throughout the season.
Reflecting on the Match Against SRH
The match against Sunrisers Hyderabad served as a microcosm of CSK’s season. While the visiting side was bolstered by a clinical 70 from Ishan Kishan and a crucial 47 from Heinrich Klaasen, the Chennai side struggled to defend their total on a challenging surface. SRH skipper Pat Cummins praised the resilience of his team, stating, “It was a gutsy effort by Klaasen and Ishan. Now that we have qualified, the real test begins.”
Despite the heartbreak, Gaikwad remained professional in the post-match presentation. He acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, particularly in home matches, and expressed a desire to return with a more robust strategy for 2027. “It was a great game till the end, we lost a few home games. We were better compared to last year and hope to come back in 2027 with a stronger unit,” the skipper noted.
The Road Ahead
As the curtains close on another IPL cycle, the Chennai Super Kings face a period of introspection. The transition from the Dhoni era remains the most significant challenge in the franchise’s history. Whether the management decides to stick with Gaikwad to build on his experience or opts for a change in leadership like Sanju Samson, the upcoming months will be pivotal in defining the future of the Yellow Army. The fans, ever-loyal, will be waiting to see if the team can reclaim its winning identity in the 2027 season.
