A Bond Built on Humility
The high-octane world of the Indian Premier League often focuses on the boundaries hit and the wickets taken, but sometimes the most significant moments happen away from the cameras. During the 2026 IPL season, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain Ishan Kishan demonstrated leadership that extended far beyond the field, providing a helping hand to emerging pacer Sakib Hussain in a gesture that has recently touched the hearts of cricket fans everywhere.
The Struggle Behind the Debut
Sakib Hussain, who made his IPL debut for SRH this year, enjoyed a breakout campaign, claiming 15 wickets in 11 matches and establishing himself as a prospect to watch. However, his path to the franchise was paved with significant financial hurdles. In a candid interview with ESPNCricinfo, the right-arm pacer revealed that he previously lacked the means to afford professional-grade cricket gear.
Hussain shared that he was frequently forced to rely on inexpensive, low-quality footwear bought from roadside markets. These shoes, costing a mere ₹200-300, were never designed for the rigors of professional cricket. The soles would deteriorate rapidly, leaving him without the necessary grip on the field. This lack of proper equipment resulted in frequent ankle injuries as his feet would constantly slip during his delivery stride.
“There was a time I did not have any shoes. I couldn’t even think about owning a pair of shoes that expensive. How could I wear shoes that cost Rs 12,000-15,000? The shoes bought off the roadside for Rs 200-300 wore out soon. The sole would tear. Without spikes, my foot kept slipping and my ankles got sprained many times,” Hussain recalled.
Ishan Kishan Steps In
Upon learning of his teammate’s struggle, Ishan Kishan—who also hails from Bihar and understands the challenges of rising through the ranks from a modest background—immediately intervened. Understanding the physical toll of playing with inadequate equipment, Kishan gifted Hussain 6-7 pairs of professional spike shoes, each valued between ₹12,000 and ₹15,000.
“I have 6 pairs of spikes, currently. Ishan Bhaiya got them for me. Ishan told me he would get spikes for me, and I asked for Adipower from Adidas. So for the full season, I have been playing with the spikes he provided,” Hussain added, reflecting on the impact of Kishan’s support on his season.
A Season of Growth
The mentorship from Kishan seemed to pay dividends for the team. While Hussain was making his mark as an emerging player, Kishan himself enjoyed his most successful IPL season to date. He amassed 602 runs across 15 matches at an impressive average of 40.13, including six half-centuries and 32 towering sixes. It was the first time the dynamic batter surpassed the 600-run mark in a single edition of the tournament.
Kishan’s leadership was instrumental in guiding SRH to the playoffs, though the team’s journey ultimately concluded in the Eliminator against the Rajasthan Royals. Despite a challenging end to the campaign, the camaraderie showcased by the SRH squad, highlighted by Kishan’s mentorship of youngsters like Hussain, remains a testament to the culture within the team.
Reflecting on the IPL 2026 Eliminator
The road to the final proved difficult for Sunrisers Hyderabad. In the crucial Eliminator match at Chandigarh, the team faced a formidable Rajasthan Royals side. After a blistering performance by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who hammered 97 off just 29 balls, RR set a daunting target of 243. Despite a valiant effort from Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Reddy, the SRH batting lineup struggled under the pressure, eventually falling short by 47 runs. While the team exited the tournament, the season provided a platform for new stars to emerge and solidified the reputation of senior leaders like Ishan Kishan, who continue to inspire the next generation of cricketing talent both on and off the pitch.
