IPL 2026: Mohammad Kaif Snubs Patidar and Iyer, Names Best Captain

The closing stages of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season have brought intense drama, tactical masterclasses, and a major shift in how the league’s top leaders are perceived. With three of the four coveted playoff spots already securely locked in by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Gujarat Titans (GT), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), cricket pundits and fans alike are dissecting the campaigns to crown the standout performer of the tournament. Among the many talking points, the debate surrounding the season’s best captain has taken an intriguing turn.

Entering the 2026 edition, much of the pre-season hype centered around Shreyas Iyer and Rajat Patidar. Having led their respective teams to the finals in 2025, both players were widely touted as the premier captains in the competition, tipped to replicate their tactical brilliance and guide their franchises back to the ultimate stage. However, as the league phase draws to a close, former India international and prominent broadcaster Mohammad Kaif has delivered a fascinating verdict, looking past both Iyer and Patidar to name another young Indian superstar as the tournament’s best captain.

The Capitulation of Punjab Kings Under Shreyas Iyer

At the start of the season, Shreyas Iyer seemed to be on course to justify his status as one of the league’s elite leaders. Under his stewardship, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) enjoyed an extraordinary run, going undefeated in their first seven matches. Iyer’s leadership was highly praised as PBKS dominated the early half of the tournament, looking like certain contenders for the top spot.

However, the second half of the league phase exposed critical vulnerabilities. The Punjab Kings suffered a dramatic capitulation, slumping to six consecutive defeats. This sudden loss of momentum saw them plummet from the number one spot down to fifth on the points table, leaving them staring at a disappointing early exit from the tournament. Despite Iyer’s early-season accolades, this severe dip in form ultimately ruled him out of the conversation for the season’s top leadership award.

Rajat Patidar’s Steady Campaign with RCB

On the other hand, Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Rajat Patidar has continued to build on his growing reputation. Patidar has successfully navigated the high-pressure environment of Bengaluru to guide his team back into the playoffs. With RCB firmly in contention to finish in the top two and secure a spot in Qualifier 1, Patidar’s tactical acumen has once again been vindicated.

Yet, while Patidar’s steady hand has kept RCB among the frontrunners, his campaign was not deemed the absolute best by experts. Instead, it is the remarkable turnaround and tactical efficiency of another franchise that has captured the attention of seasoned observers.

Mohammad Kaif Crowns Shubman Gill as the Best Captain of IPL 2026

Mohammad Kaif, a member of the historic Rajasthan Royals squad that won the inaugural IPL in 2008 and now a highly respected voice in the broadcasting community, has officially snubbed both Patidar and Iyer. Sharing his detailed observations on his social media account, Kaif named Gujarat Titans’ captain Shubman Gill as the standout leader of the IPL 2026 season.

Kaif pointed out that the true hallmark of Gill’s captaincy this season has been his incredibly efficient utilization of bowling resources. Throughout the campaign, the Gujarat Titans have shown a ruthless ability to dismantle opposing batting lineups. Under Gill’s guidance, GT managed to bowl out some of the most formidable teams in the competition, including Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Chennai Super Kings. This defensive dominance is a massive testament to Gill’s on-field field placements, bowling changes, and tactical maturity.

Leading from the Front: Shubman Gill’s Stellar Batting Stats

In addition to his tactical brilliance, Gill has led his side by example with the bat. Over the course of 13 innings in the league phase, the elegant right-hander has amassed a staggering 616 runs at an exceptional strike rate of 161.67. He currently sits second on the Orange Cap leaderboard, trailing only his opening partner Sai Sudharsan. This ability to carry the heavy burden of captaincy while remaining one of the tournament’s most destructive batsmen has further elevated his standing in the eyes of analysts like Kaif.

The Rise, Fall, and Resurgence of Gujarat Titans

To fully appreciate Gill’s achievement, one must look at the trajectory of the Gujarat Titans franchise since its inception in 2022. Under the initial leadership of Hardik Pandya, GT enjoyed immediate success, winning the title in their debut year and finishing as runners-up in 2023—a season where Gill himself was in sensational form, scoring 890 runs with three centuries to claim the Orange Cap.

However, when Pandya departed for the Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2024 season, Gill was handed the captaincy reins. It proved to be a tough learning curve, as the franchise struggled and finished a disappointing eighth on the table. Crucially, the GT management maintained complete faith in their young leader, a decision that has paid off handsomely.

In 2025, Gill led a strong resurgence, steering GT to a third-place finish, just one point behind the league leaders. In the ongoing 2026 season, they have consolidated their position among the elite, accumulating 18 points from 14 matches to virtually secure a spot in Qualifier 1. Their final positioning in the top two will be confirmed if RCB defeats SRH on Friday.

Could Gill Transition to All-Format Captaincy for India?

Gill’s stellar performance as GT leader has inevitably sparked discussions regarding his future with the national team. Following his successful 2025 IPL campaign, Gill’s leadership credentials were recognized on the international stage as he was named India’s Test and ODI captain, taking over from Rohit Sharma. Although he was briefly handed the T20I vice-captaincy, he was subsequently left out of India’s T20 World Cup squad due to concerns over his batting tempo in T20Is.

However, by wrapping up the IPL 2026 league phase with a superb strike rate of 161.67 and another 600-plus run season, Gill has silenced critics of his T20 batting style. This resurgence could put him back in the frame as a potential long-term successor to Suryakumar Yadav for the national T20I captaincy. While such a transition remains speculative and other experienced names are certainly in the mix, his current status as a successful leader in two international formats makes the prospect of him becoming India’s all-format captain a very real possibility.
