BCCI Tightens Security Protocols for IPL 2026
In a move to uphold the integrity of the game, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a stern directive regarding the use of ‘Smart Sunglasses’ during the ongoing IPL 2026 season. As the tournament reaches its thrilling conclusion, the cricket board has made it clear that technology capable of facilitating unauthorized communication will not be tolerated within the Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA).
The Reason Behind the Ban
The decision stems from observations made by the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU), which noted that several companies were actively marketing these high-tech accessories to players and support staff. According to an official memo issued by the BCCI, these glasses are far more than simple eyewear; they are equipped with advanced features including live streaming, text messaging capabilities, and audio/video calling via mobile data or Wi-Fi.
The memo explicitly states: ‘Under the Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA), Smart Sunglasses or Goggles can be classified as a Communication Device or Audio and Video Recording device, and there is a strict prohibition of using such devices near the PMOA.’
This enforcement is part of a broader crackdown on communication devices within restricted zones. Earlier this season, the Rajasthan Royals team manager was fined INR 1 Lakh after being caught on camera using a mobile phone in a prohibited area, highlighting the board’s zero-tolerance policy toward potential breaches of protocol.
Strict Penalties for Non-Compliance
Moving forward, all players and management staff are required to submit any such devices to designated security personnel before entering restricted areas. The board has issued a warning that failure to adhere to these regulations will result in significant penalties for both the individuals involved and their respective franchises. The primary goal of these measures is to eliminate any possibility of external influence or unauthorized data transmission that could compromise the fairness of the competition.
On-Field Action: Gujarat Titans Advance to the Final
While administrative matters have dominated the headlines, the action on the field has been equally intense. The IPL 2026 landscape saw a major shift as the Gujarat Titans secured their place in the tournament final after a commanding performance against the Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2.
The 2022 champions displayed clinical precision in New Chandigarh, chasing down a formidable target with ease. Despite a valiant effort from Rajasthan Royals’ Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who scored 96 runs to help his side post a total of 214 for 6, the Titans proved to be the stronger side on the night.
A High-Stakes Final Awaits
Gujarat Titans’ victory by 7 wickets was anchored by an exceptional match-winning century from captain Shubman Gill. His ability to anchor the chase and dismantle the Rajasthan bowling attack was the highlight of the evening, ensuring his team’s path to the summit clash.
The stage is now set for the grand finale on May 31, where the Gujarat Titans will face off against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. With the Titans in such clinical form and the RCB side firing on all cylinders, cricket fans can expect a blockbuster finish to what has been a highly competitive 2026 season. As the teams prepare for the ultimate showdown, the BCCI continues its work behind the scenes to ensure that the final match remains untarnished by any regulatory violations.
