The landscape of Indian T20 cricket is witnessing a transformation, and at the heart of this shift is 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Following back-to-back stellar seasons in the IPL, the young talent has officially forced his way into the national setup. India chief selector Ajit Agarkar did not mince words when discussing the selection, emphasizing that the youngster’s output was simply impossible to ignore.
Forcing the Selection
Agarkar remarked that the panel had little choice but to select Sooryavanshi, noting that the teenager effectively forced his way into the squad through sheer performance. During the 2026 IPL season, Sooryavanshi amassed 776 runs at a staggering strike rate of 237.30. His ability to single-handedly guide the Rajasthan Royals to the playoffs caught the eyes of the national selectors, resulting in his inclusion for the upcoming T20I assignments against Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games.
“I think he just has picked himself really,” Agarkar stated. “With his performances, he has almost forced us to pick him with how well he has played. For a young kid… I don’t need to talk about how well he is playing. And it’s not just this season. He obviously had a great start to his IPL career last season.”
A Proven Track Record
Sooryavanshi’s rapid ascent is not merely a product of one season. At just 14, he etched his name into the record books by becoming the youngest centurion in men’s T20 history, slamming a 38-ball 101 against the Gujarat Titans in 2025. His fearlessness against world-class bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Starc has provided the selection committee with the confidence that he is ready for international exposure.
Agarkar highlighted that while age is a factor, the pressure-cooker environment of the IPL served as the perfect audition. “To back it up for a young kid in a competition that’s as competitive and has a high-pressure environment, and how explosive he can be and a game-changer that he can be. Like everyone else that has watched T20 cricket in India, we have got high hopes of him,” he added.
Managing Expectations and Future Development
While the excitement surrounding Sooryavanshi is palpable, the selection committee is keen on a balanced approach. Agarkar was quick to clarify that while the T20 format is currently the focus, the team will exercise caution regarding his transition to other formats, including red-ball cricket. Having recorded 207 runs in eight first-class matches with a high score of 93, the youngster has shown glimpses of promise in longer formats, but the BCCI remains committed to taking his development one step at a time.
