Bangladesh recall Mosaddek after four years for ODIs against Australia: A Strategic Move

Arun Kumar · · 5 min read

In a significant development for Bangladesh cricket, national selectors have announced a bolstered ODI squad for the upcoming series against Australia, featuring the return of middle-order batter Mosaddek Hossain after a four-year hiatus. This strategic decision sees Bangladesh recall Mosaddek after four years for ODIs against Australia, signalling a clear intent to strengthen the team’s batting capabilities. Mosaddek, aged 30, is one of two crucial changes to the squad that last competed against New Zealand in April, with wicketkeeper-batter Nurul Hasan also making a comeback. The additions come at the expense of Mahidul Islam and Afif Hossain, reflecting a tactical shift aimed at addressing the team’s persistent middle-order vulnerabilities. This squad has been meticulously selected for the initial two encounters of the highly anticipated series.

Mosaddek Hossain’s recall is a direct testament to his exceptional form in the ongoing Dhaka Premier League (DPL). Having last played an ODI in August 2022 – one of his 43 career matches – his current domestic performances have been nothing short of stellar. In just five DPL matches, Mosaddek has already amassed a century and two half-centuries, boasting an impressive batting average of 89. Beyond his prowess with the bat, his off-spin has also been highly effective, yielding 11 wickets at a remarkable average of 16.27. His consistency in the DPL over the past three seasons has evidently caught the eye of the selectors, making his return a well-deserved one.

His potential return to the crucial middle-order role is viewed as a significant asset for Bangladesh. Mosaddek has consistently been one of the most reliable run-makers in this position in domestic competitions. The addition of Nurul Hasan, who missed the New Zealand series, further aims to fortify this segment of the batting lineup. Both players are expected to provide the much-needed stability and scoring impetus that Mahidul and Afif, unfortunately, could not consistently deliver in the middle overs during recent international outings.

Strategic Squad Adjustments Explained

Chief selector Habibul Bashar elaborated on the rationale behind these pivotal squad changes, emphasizing the tactical nature of the decisions. “We couldn’t provide Afif and Mahidul with a lot of opportunities. Replacing them is a tactical change,” Bashar stated. His comments underscore the urgency to find players who can perform specific roles effectively, particularly in the demanding middle-order positions.

Bashar further highlighted Mosaddek’s multifaceted contributions: “Mosaddek could bat at No. 6. He is in good form. He has more skills to offer. He is in good form in the DPL. He also has all-round ability. He bowls quite well. He could offer a balance for us in the middle-order.” This indicates that Mosaddek’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball, along with his current purple patch, makes him an ideal candidate to provide the team with much-needed equilibrium and depth.

Regarding Nurul Hasan’s inclusion, Bashar explained, “Nurul Hasan is replacing Mahidul because the latter is a top-order batter. Nurul bats around No. 6 or 7 as a wicketkeeper-batter. We believe Nurul is more skillful in that position.” This demonstrates a clear strategy to slot players into roles where their specific skill sets are best utilized, optimizing the team’s composition for the challenging Australian opposition.

Addressing Batting Inconsistencies

Bangladesh’s batting unit has faced considerable inconsistency in their recent ODI series against Pakistan and New Zealand. While Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto have shown flashes of form, others like Saif Hassan and Towhid Hridoy have struggled to make a significant impact in the ODI format. Captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz, despite his continued success as a bowler, has not replicated his impressive batting form from the 2022-23 season. These collective struggles in scoring have created pressure points, particularly in the middle overs, making the recall of experienced and in-form players like Mosaddek and Nurul even more critical.

The expectation is that these new additions will inject fresh energy and provide the necessary solidity and acceleration during the crucial middle and death overs. The onus will be on these players, along with the established top-order, to ensure competitive totals are posted or chased effectively against a world-class Australian bowling attack.

The Strength of the Bowling Unit

Once again, a significant portion of Bangladesh’s hopes will rest on the shoulders of their potent bowling attack. Emerging talent Nahid Rana, who has already claimed a five-wicket haul in both ODIs and Tests since March, will be a key player. His recent form suggests he could be a significant threat to the Australian batters. The pace battery also features experienced campaigners such as Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, and Shoriful Islam, all capable of producing match-winning spells. Their ability to pick up early wickets and contain runs in the middle and death overs will be crucial.

In the spin department, Rishad Hossain will be looking to leverage his familiarity with the Australian batters, having played in the Big Bash League (BBL) last season. This experience could prove invaluable in strategizing against and exploiting the weaknesses of the visitors. The collective strength and varied skill sets of Bangladesh’s bowlers will undoubtedly be a major factor in their pursuit of success against Australia.

A Long-Awaited Bilateral Clash

The upcoming ODI series marks a historic occasion, as it will be Bangladesh’s first bilateral ODI series against Australia in a remarkable fifteen years. This extended gap underscores the rarity and significance of this encounter. The three-match series is scheduled to be played in Mirpur on June 9, 11, and 14, providing a home advantage for Bangladesh. Historically, Bangladesh’s only ODI victory against Australia dates back to a 2005 tri-series match in Cardiff, highlighting the enormity of the challenge ahead. The team will be eager to write a new chapter in this cricketing rivalry and demonstrate their growth as an international side. The inclusion of players like Mosaddek Hossain, coming off strong domestic performances, is expected to play a key role in this ambition.
