Mohammad Kaif Questions BCCI’s Selection Choices for Afghanistan Series

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently unveiled the squads for the upcoming Test and One-Day International (ODI) series against Afghanistan, set to commence on June 6th. While Shubman Gill has been entrusted with leading both sides, the appointments of KL Rahul as vice-captain for the Tests and Shreyas Iyer for the ODIs have sparked considerable debate among cricket pundits. Notably, Rishabh Pant, who previously held the vice-captaincy in Test cricket and even led the side in a home series against South Africa, was not retained in the leadership role. This decision, among others, has drawn sharp criticism from former Indian batter Mohammad Kaif.

The Demotion of Rishabh Pant: A Questionable Call?

Mohammad Kaif, a respected voice in Indian cricket, expressed his displeasure during a discussion on JioStar, stating, “Pant hasn’t done anything wrong. Both ODI and Tests are totally different formats.” Kaif’s argument highlights the distinct demands of each format, suggesting that performance in one should not necessarily dictate standing in another, especially concerning leadership roles. Rishabh Pant’s record in Test cricket provides a compelling basis for Kaif’s stance. In the 2025 season, the dynamic wicketkeeper-batter stood as the fifth-highest run-scorer in the longest format of the game, a testament to his consistent contributions.

  • Test Performance in 2025: Played seven games
  • Total Runs: 629 runs
  • Centuries: Two
  • Fifties: Four
  • Batting Average: 48

These statistics underscore Pant’s significant impact and match-winning capabilities in Test cricket. Kaif further elaborated on his concerns, pointing out what he perceives as an unfair assessment of Pant. “You are judging Pant based on his IPL captaincy skills. There are talks that under his captaincy, the team (LSG) is losing, and the player himself is not scoring runs. But Rishabh Pant is India’s biggest match-winner in the Test format as a batter,” Kaif asserted. This suggests a potential conflation of performances across formats and roles, which Kaif believes is detrimental to a player of Pant’s caliber in Test matches.

While Pant was included in the Test squad, he was conspicuously omitted from the ODI setup, with Ishan Kishan making a comeback. This further complicates the narrative surrounding the selectors’ decision-making process concerning Pant’s overall standing in the national team.

Mohammed Shami‘s Continued Omission and the Age Factor

Beyond Rishabh Pant, Kaif also raised pointed questions regarding the consistent overlooking of veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami. Despite Shami’s sustained good form and proven fitness in recent months, he was once again ignored for national selection. This decision was explained by Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, who reportedly stated that medical reports indicated Shami’s body was currently prepared only for T20 cricket. This justification has not sat well with Kaif, who perceives an inconsistency in the selection committee’s approach.

The former Indian star also questioned the decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah, which means the new-ball attack will be spearheaded by Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, with Gurnoor Brar a likely debutant. Kaif drew a direct comparison to highlight what he sees as a double standard. “KL is 34, you don’t pick Shami because of his age, but appoint Rahul as the vice-captain. The selectors have to be consistent. I would urge them to go by form and not look at the age factor. If a player is scoring runs and picking wickets, he should be selected,” Kaif argued passionately. This statement reflects a broader debate within cricket about prioritizing experience and current performance over perceived age-related limitations.

Kaif concluded his critique by reiterating his firm belief that Rishabh Pant deserved to retain his position as the Test vice-captain. His comments underscore a call for transparency, consistency, and a merit-based approach to team selection, urging the BCCI to consider players’ current form and specific format strengths above all other factors.
