The Rise of the ‘Chit Celebration’ in IPL 2026

The Indian Premier League (IPL) never fails to entertain both on and off the field. As the IPL 2026 league stage approaches its thrilling climax, a hilarious off-field trend has captured the attention of cricket fans worldwide. Ahead of the highly anticipated clash between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on May 21, 2026, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, GT’s star spinner Rashid Khan took a playful swipe at CSK players regarding a bizarre new trend taking the tournament by storm: celebrating milestones with written notes.

This “note-showing” trend has quickly escalated into a league-wide phenomenon. It all began earlier this season when Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Abhishek Sharma celebrated a sensational century by pulling out a written chit to share a message with the crowd and his loved ones. What seemed like a unique, emotional gesture soon became a template for other young players to express themselves after standout performances.

Young Stars Hop on the Trend

Several players have embraced the trend after achieving personal milestones. Raghu Sharma, who has played a handful of games for the Mumbai Indians, started the ball rolling on May 4. After taking his maiden IPL wicket for MI against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Raghu proudly displayed a note with “Jai Shri Ram” written on it.

Chennai Super Kings batter Urvil Patel followed suit in spectacular fashion. During a brilliant knock against LSG, Urvil equaled the record for the fastest fifty in IPL history by reaching the milestone in just 13 balls. Upon doing so, he showed a note dedicating his breathtaking innings to his father. The latest player to join this bandwagon was LSG pacer Akash Singh, who displayed a note with a motivating message after securing a three-wicket haul against CSK on May 15.

Deepak Chahar’s Hilarious Parody

With the trend picking up speed, it was only a matter of time before senior players started poking fun at it. Chennai Super Kings’ seasoned bowler Deepak Chahar took the opportunity to mock the celebration during Mumbai Indians’ match against Kolkata Knight Riders on May 20.

After dismissing KKR opener Finn Allen for just 6 runs, Chahar stopped his celebrating teammates in their tracks. He playfully pretended to reach into his pocket, pull out an imaginary note, and display it proudly to the television cameras. The mock celebration quickly went viral on social media, adding to the lighthearted banter surrounding the trend.

Rashid Khan’s ‘Pocket Inspection’ Warning

The banter reached a new peak when players from Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings met ahead of their final league game in Ahmedabad. In a video capturing the warm camaraderie between the two camps, Rashid Khan jokingly warned Urvil Patel about his pocket contents.

Rashid playfully told Urvil that when he walks out to bat, Rashid will personally search his pockets to ensure no secret notes are smuggled onto the field. Amidst bursts of laughter from Urvil and other players, Rashid also mentioned that he was checking Dewald Brevis for notes as well, teasing that the CSK players have become notoriously famous for showing off their written messages.

High Stakes in Ahmedabad: GT Eyes Top Two, CSK Fights for Survival

While the pre-match atmosphere remains friendly, the actual battle on the pitch carries massive implications for both franchises. Gujarat Titans enter the contest in a strong position, having already qualified for the IPL 2026 playoffs after Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Chennai Super Kings in their previous match. GT is currently placed second on the points table with 16 points from 13 games. A victory in this final league match will push them to 18 points, securing a top-two finish and a coveted spot in Qualifier 1.

On the other hand, the situation is incredibly tense for Chennai Super Kings. Currently languishing in 7th place with 12 points from 12 games, CSK’s playoff hopes hang by a thread. To stand any chance of qualifying, the Men in Yellow must win this game to reach 14 points, and then hope that both Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals lose their final league matches. With everything on the line, cricket fans can expect an intense battle—though perhaps with fewer paper chits in the players’ pockets.
