The recent announcement of India’s squad for the upcoming series against Afghanistan has stirred significant debate among cricket enthusiasts and experts alike. While the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, introduced several tactical changes and addressed the workload management of senior players, the most glaring talking point was the absence of Jammu and Kashmir’s pace sensation, Auqib Nabi, from the one-off Test squad.
Nabi, who has been nothing short of phenomenal in domestic cricket, seemed like a natural candidate for the national team. His performance in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season was nothing short of historic, cementing his status as one of the most exciting young fast bowlers in the country today.
Dominance on the Domestic Circuit
Auqib Nabi’s exclusion is particularly puzzling given the numbers he produced during the most recent Ranji Trophy campaign. As the spearhead of the Jammu and Kashmir bowling attack, Nabi was instrumental in leading his state to their maiden Ranji Trophy title. He finished the season as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker, claiming an astounding 60 wickets in just 17 innings. With a staggering average of 12.56 and an economy rate of 2.65, his ability to trouble batters with bounce and disciplined line and length was unmatched.
His tally included seven five-wicket hauls, a testament to his consistency and match-winning capabilities. His breakthrough season did not go unnoticed by scouts, as evidenced by his acquisition by the Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2026 auction for Rs 8.40 crore.
The BCCI’s Strategic Roadmap
While the selectors opted for a different direction for the Afghanistan series, it has become clear that the BCCI is not ignoring Nabi’s talent; rather, they are adopting a measured approach to his development. According to reports, the Indian cricket board has mapped out a specific progression plan to prepare the youngster for the rigors of international cricket.
The current strategy involves blooding Nabi into the ‘India A’ setup. This transition phase is designed to expose him to high-level competition against international ‘A’ teams, ensuring he is battle-hardened before stepping onto the Test stage.
The India A Pathway
The roadmap includes significant opportunities for Nabi to prove his mettle later this year. India A is scheduled to host Australia A for two four-day matches in Puducherry from September 22-25 and September 29-October 2. These red-ball matches will be followed by a series of one-day encounters on October 6, 9, and 11. It is understood that Nabi is in line to feature in these fixtures, as well as potential engagements against Sri Lanka A.
Should he perform with the same intensity that he showed during the Ranji Trophy, these India A matches could serve as the final stepping stone toward a national call-up, possibly as early as the India tour of New Zealand, which is slated to begin in late October 2026.
A Broader Squad Overhaul
The squad announcement for the Afghanistan tour marked a period of transition for Indian cricket.
