Mahmudullah and Sujon Headline BCB Election Draft Voter List
The Countdown to the Bangladesh Cricket Board Election Begins
With the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) election looming on the horizon, the cricketing fraternity is abuzz with anticipation. Following the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha festivities, a new board will be formed to oversee the development and management of the sport for the next four years. The electoral process, which involves the selection of councillors, has officially commenced, and the draft voter list features several high-profile names that reflect the deep-rooted history of Bangladesh cricket.
High-Profile Inclusions in the Voter List
Among the most notable developments is the inclusion of former Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah Riyad, who is set to become a BCB voter for the first time. He is joined by the experienced Khaled Mahmud Sujon, a former BCB director and ex-captain, both of whom carry significant weight in the cricketing community. The involvement of such seasoned figures underscores the importance of this electoral cycle.
The nomination process, led by BCB president Tamim Iqbal, includes an array of distinguished former captains and selectors, such as Shafiq-ul-Haq Heera, Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu, and the current chief selector Habibul Bashar Sumon. Their presence as councillors signifies a blend of historical experience and modern administrative insight aimed at steering the future of the game.
Diverse Representation in Category-3
The Cricketers’ Welfare Association (CWAB) has also made its mark by nominating former cricketer Shahriar Hossain Biddut. The councillor list is further enriched by other stalwarts including Syed Rasel, Nadif Chowdhury, Nazmul Hossain, Dollar Mahmud, and Shamsur Rahman Shuvo. Additionally, popular commentator Mazhar Uddin Omi, who shares a rich history with national stars like Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal, has been included.
These individuals fall under Category-3, which commands a total of 42 votes. This category is uniquely diverse, encompassing representatives from major institutions such as Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the Bangladesh Police, various education boards, and prominent universities like the University of Dhaka and the University of Chittagong. The National Sports Council (NSC) also maintains its role within this category.
Club Representation and Electoral Structure
Beyond former players, the list features influential club representatives who are instrumental in the domestic cricket circuit. Notable figures include Fahim Sinha (Abahani Limited), Masuduzzaman (Mohammedan Sporting Club), and Tanzil Chowdhury (Prime Bank), among others. Furthermore, Fortune Barishal owner Mizanur Rahman will represent the Barishal Divisional Sports Association, highlighting the integration of club-level governance with national board oversight.
The election structure remains consistent with previous years, comprising 23 total positions: 10 from Category-1, 12 from Category-2, and one from Category-3.
Timeline for the Upcoming Election
The administrative timeline is now firmly in place. The final voter list is scheduled for publication on May 19. Following a rigorous nomination submission and verification period, the final list of candidates will be announced on May 25. For those unable to vote in person, e-ballot and postal voting options will be facilitated between June 1 and June 6, with a firm deadline for receipt at the BCB office by 1 PM on June 7.
The election itself is slated to take place on June 7, with polls open from 10 AM to 4 PM at the BCB board room. The culmination of this process will be the announcement of the results at 6 PM that same evening, marking a new chapter for the governing body of Bangladesh cricket.
