Mohsin Naqvi IPL Final Attendance Rumors: Truth Behind ICC Meeting Revealed

Mohsin Naqvi Will Not Attend ICC Meeting or IPL Final in Ahmedabad

Contrary to widespread speculation, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi will not be traveling to India for the upcoming ICC Board meeting scheduled for May 30 and 31 in Ahmedabad. Despite rumors linking his visit to the IPL 2026 final, which coincides with the last day of the meeting, official reports confirm that Naqvi has no plans to attend either event in person.

No Personal Invitation for IPL Final

According to a PTI report, Mohsin Naqvi was not personally invited by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to attend the IPL final at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Any potential attendance would have been strictly in his official capacity as an ICC Board member, not as a guest of honor or special invitee for the final. The clarification dismisses assumptions circulating in certain sections of the Pakistani media.

Virtual Participation Expected

Naqvi is expected to join the ICC Board meeting virtually, along with two other board members who will also participate via video conference. The International Cricket Council has long allowed virtual attendance for member representatives when physical presence is not feasible—making Naqvi’s remote participation fully in line with standard ICC protocols.

Meeting Relocated Due to Geopolitical Concerns

The ICC Board meeting was originally set to take place in Doha, Qatar, at the end of March. However, due to rising geopolitical tensions, including concerns related to the USA-Iran conflict, the ICC was forced to both postpone and relocate the meeting. Ahmedabad emerged as the new host city, pushing the event to the end of May.

Impact on IPL Final Venue Decision

In a recent interview with RevSportz, IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal revealed that the relocation of the ICC meeting to Ahmedabad played a significant role in the BCCI’s decision to move the IPL 2026 final from Bengaluru to the Narendra Modi Stadium. The logistical convenience and heightened security coordination likely factored into the choice.

Key Agenda: Future of ICC Broadcasting Rights

The primary focus of the ICC meeting will be the organization’s upcoming media rights negotiations. The current broadcasting deal with JioStar is set to expire in 2027, and discussions will center on future bids, digital expansion, and global distribution strategies. This decision will shape how fans across the world access international cricket in the coming decade.

Cricket Diplomacy and Bilateral Tensions

Mohsin Naqvi played a pivotal role in brokering a three-way agreement between the PCB, BCCI, and ICC, ensuring both India and Pakistan can participate in ICC events hosted by each other—without requiring full bilateral tours. This arrangement was tested during recent tournaments, including the Champions Trophy and the Men’s T20 World Cup, where both teams played in neutral venues.

India competed in the UAE during Pakistan’s home tournament, while Pakistan played their matches in Sri Lanka during India’s hosting duties. This model is expected to continue until at least 2027.

ICC’s Commitment to Global Cricket Growth

In its original announcement, the ICC emphasized that hosting the meeting in Doha reflected its commitment to expanding cricket in non-traditional regions. The organization praised the Qatar Cricket Association and the nation’s Olympic Committee for advancing cricket development in the Gulf.

Despite the venue change, the core purpose remains the same: to discuss governance, strategic planning, and the long-term sustainability of the sport at a global level.

As the cricketing world shifts focus to Ahmedabad, the absence of key figures like Mohsin Naqvi will not stall decision-making—but it does underscore the complex interplay between sport, politics, and diplomacy in modern international cricket.
