Punjab Kings Address Arshdeep Singh Controversy: A Look Into Recent Events

Veer Anand · · 4 min read

The Growing Storm Around Arshdeep Singh

The 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season has been far from smooth for Punjab Kings (PBKS) pacer Arshdeep Singh. Once celebrated as a fan favorite for his infectious, humorous, and witty personality, the left-arm fast bowler now finds himself at the center of a mounting series of controversies. What was once viewed as a joyful demeanor has, in the eyes of many, crossed the line into problematic behavior, prompting an official response from his IPL franchise.

A Pattern of Controversy

The issues surrounding Arshdeep have accumulated rapidly throughout the current season. From alleged confrontations at airports to breaches of team protocol, the pacer’s off-field conduct has drawn significant attention. Perhaps the most notable incident involved a viral video showing Arshdeep with his rumoured partner, Samreen Kaur, on the official team bus—a direct violation of BCCI protocols which strictly prohibit non-team members from accessing these private spaces.

Furthermore, the franchise reportedly had to intervene regarding his prolific vlogging habits, which many felt were becoming a distraction. However, the most severe backlash has stemmed from allegations of colorist remarks. Arshdeep recently faced intense criticism for a Snapchat post where he referred to Indian teammate and World Cup winner Tilak Varma as ‘Andhera’ (darkness). This was not an isolated incident; critics and social media users have pointed to previous remarks made by the pacer toward players like Sai Sudharsan and Sakib Hussain, suggesting a concerning pattern of behavior.

The Team Perspective: Andrew Leipus Responds

Ahead of the crucial clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Dharamsala, PBKS Head of Sports Science, Andrew Leipus, faced questions from the media regarding the ongoing situation. Leipus, maintaining a professional distance, emphasized that he does not actively monitor social media, noting that his primary focus remains on the physical and technical well-being of the players.

“I don’t follow a lot of social media myself, so I know there’s been a bit of chatter behind the scenes regarding various things, like vlogging. I’m not across that. In terms of his behavior, Arsh is pretty much a flat line. He’s not up or down,” Leipus stated during the press conference.

Leipus further highlighted the internal dynamic, describing Arshdeep as a “very loud person” in the dressing room, but insisted that this energy does not necessarily translate to instability. “He gives his best out there. We’ve been working together, and looking at his body, there may be restrictions that could be a reason for some of his performances being up and down. He’s been feeling a lot better in the last couple of weeks, physically. Overall, he’s pretty consistent with his behavior and his attitude.”

The Broader Issue of Social Media in Cricket

Beyond the individual case of Arshdeep Singh, Leipus touched upon the systemic challenge that social media poses to modern cricket squads. He acknowledged that while the digital age offers commercial opportunities, it creates an environment where players are constantly tethered to their phones, potentially eroding the team culture that is essential for success.

“You look across every team, you’ll see guys are sitting there on their phones in the buses. There’s not a lot of chatter going on. It is a problem, I think,” Leipus admitted. He pointed to the ICC’s past initiatives of restricting phone usage in dressing rooms as a positive model for fostering genuine human connection within teams. “When you’re in that team environment, it’s not an issue. It’s outside that when it becomes an issue. I’ve heard rumors, but I don’t really have time to pay attention to that. I think it’s potentially something that needs to be addressed.”

Moving Forward

As the Punjab Kings navigate the remainder of the season, the focus will inevitably shift toward how the management balances the personal freedom of their athletes with the team’s public image and internal discipline. For Arshdeep Singh, the challenge will be to recalibrate his public presence and ensure that his contributions on the cricket field remain the primary narrative associated with his name. Whether the team will take further disciplinary action remains to be seen, but the message from the leadership is clear: the distraction caused by digital engagement is an area that requires careful management in an increasingly connected world.
